Mission Saipal

The documentary film, Mission Saipal, is based in Sudurpashchim Province -- the farthest province from the capital city of Nepal. The province is not only the farthest, but also socially and economically backward compared to other provinces of Nepal. It is at the lowest level among provinces Nepal in terms of human development indicators. With nearly 34% of the population living below poverty line, the province has the highest level of poverty across the country. The fact that it accounted for only 1.14% of revenue collection for the country speaks loud and clear about the sorry state of this province.

The province also does not fare well in social indicators. It has one of the highest infant and maternal mortality rates in the country, while HIV, malnutrition and amnesia are other major maladies. As daughters are married off at an early age, school drop-out rate of girl child is comparatively higher. The province sees one of the worst forms of gender discrimination in the country. While there are more shrines of goddesses than gods in this province, it is a pity that women folks aren’t allowed to worship in these shrines. Women here are victimized in the name of Chhaupadi – an evil social tradition that banishes women from home when they have their periods.

The province, where this film is based, is home to tall mountains, Himalayan meadows rich in medicinal herbs including the Yarsagumba, fast flowing rivers, tranquil lakes, deep valleys and far-flung settlements detached from modern civilization. However, social discriminations, superstitions and different taboos have been putting a blemish on the good image of the province that is rich in natural and cultural attractions.

Social discriminations and superstitions, which are existing since centuries, cannot be corrected overnight. The government has put in place strong laws in a bid to control such discriminations. But they are not becoming effective. Menstruating women are girls are still dying in attacks from snake bites, or being raped. This evil system can be ended only through social awareness and women empowerment.

Realizing this very fact, this film uses local women to prove their point in the society through mountaineering. Women, who are not even allowed to go to the mountains, go on to summit an unclimbed mountain – something which even men in the region have failed to do.

While disseminating the message of social awareness and women empowerment, this film showcases amazing natural and cultural beauty which can help in promotion of tourism in the region and ultimately social and socio-economic empowerment of the local people. Shamans connecting the main characters with the god and the spirit of the dead people, different types of animal sacrifice, and cultural performances are sure to leave the audience awestruck.
